WAVERLY — The Hemp Geek Waverly 12U AAU travel basketball team try-outs have concluded and the team has been selected. It includes athletes from six different school districts in the area.

The roster consists of Waverly’s Bryce LaForest, Peyton Robinson, Rylen Larson, Porter Daddona, Preston Besmer, and Ben Shaw, as well as Athens; James Friend and Eli Hobday, Tioga’s Jackson Bombard, Owego’s Calvin Smith, Horseheads’ Keagan Zeller, and Sayre’s Carson Rockwell and Hogan Shaw.

The team is coached by Reggie Hawkins, who is the head coach at Montrose High School and of the Binghamton Bulldogs. He will be assisted by Jordan Shaw, and Waverly High School players Ryan Lambert and Joey Tomasso.

The team is sponsored by Hemp Geek, Broad Street Barber Shop, Pudgie’s Pizza, Tomasso’s Restaurant, Big Foote’s, and Texas Roadhouse.

The team will also be the guests of former Binghamton High School and North Carolina standout King Rice, who is now the head coach at Monmouth University, for the MAAC Tournament at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City March 12-15.

Tim Birney is the founder / owner of River Road Media Group. He was born and raised in the Valley, graduating from Waverly High School in 1984.

Birney earned an Associate's Degree in Journalism from SUNY Morrisville in 1986 and a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism / Public Relations from Utica College of Syracuse University in 1988. He began his newspaper career at The Daily Review in Towanda in 1989, before moving on to The Evening Times in 1995. He spent more than 10 years at the Times, the last four as Managing Editor.
